MY FAIR LADY // Cinema Sunday @ The Cinematheque
1131 Howe Street, Vancouver
ALL AGES! What does it take to transform a dishevelled Cockney flower girl into a refined British duchess? Why, a lesson in elocution, of course! That?s the premise of director George Cukor's 1964 adaptation of the massively successful Lerner and Loewe Broadway musical based on Shaw's Pygmalion. Starring the radiant Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle, the waif-who-would-be-lady, and Rex Harrison as Henry Higgins, her uppity elocution professor, this lavish Hollywood heavyweight - winner of eight Oscars, and celebrating its 50th anniversary this year - is an undeniable film-lover's classic. The musical numbers include The Rain in Spain, On the Street Where You Live, and the indelible I Could Have Danced All Night. 604.688.8202, https://www.thecinematheque.ca/cinema-sunday/my-fair-lady

The 11th Annual Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival
Featuring over 90 events at over 25 locations throughout the Downtown Eastside
What an amazing decade it has been since the founding of the festival in 2014. With our 11th annual festival we are excited to begin our second decade working with and for the Downtown Eastside. The Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival is an annual cultural and heritage flagship event for the Downtown Eastside. The festival serves as a bridge building force that gives voice to the Downtown Eastside and its low income residents, cultural communities and neighbourhoods.
To celebrate and launch the second decade of the festival, the theme of the Festival this year is ‘Keeping the home fires burning.’ As we prepare to meet the challenges and opportunities of the coming decade, we are inspired by the residents and artists of the Downtown Eastside who carry the flame of our community: they warm our hearts, shed light on pressing concerns, illuminate stories old and new, fire our imaginations, and keep the torch burning for the future.
Most events are free or by suggested donation. Visit www.heartofthecityfestival.com for full details.

Evolution of the Emoticon
Combining his appreciation for the superheroes and villains of comic books with his fascination for emoticons and the roles they both play in contemporary society, Maziar creates a highbred graphic art series celebrating both.
He is intrigued how these tiny expressions originally made of punctuation marks, numbers and letters have evolved into digital characters. Now widely used in everyday communication, they convey more comprehensive emotions or express full ideas, and like a superhero or villain, his highbred works embody dynamic characteristics.  Lynn Valley Main Library 1277 Lynn Valley Rd.
