Blackthorn
is a Celtic band that saw its first inception back in 1989 when a small
group of expats found a common interest in a music that wasn’t all that
common in Vancouver at the time. Since then, the group has travelled a
long road through the streets of traditional and not-so-traditional
Celtic music, expanding their repertoire and musical skills along the
way. Blackthorn can rip up a reel, bounce along with a jig, pull your
heart strings with a mournful ballad and have you laughing and singing
along to a favourite old tune all in the course of a performance. They
play in their own style, with their own interpretation of the music and
it is very apparent when watching them, that they have fun and enjoy
what they are doing. Tickets are available on-line at www.inthehousefestival.com

GalleryOffsite: Ken Lum -- January 23 to September 6, 2010. For his
sculptural installation from shangri-la to shangri-laat Vancouver Art
Gallery Offsite, artist Ken Lum will construct scale replicas of three
squatter’s shacks from North Vancouver ’s Maplewood Mudflats
settlement. Located along the area’s intertidal zone from the early
20th century until 1971, the mudflat community was home to a number of
artists, writers and activists. For his project, Lum will recreate the
cabins of renowned writer Malcolm Lowry, artist Tom Burrows and
Greenpeace leader Dr. Paul Spong. Propped up on stilts over the surface
of the Offsite reflecting pool, the huts will strike a sharp contrast
with the surrounding downtown architecture. Located at the foot of
theShangri-La Hotel, Vancouver’s tallest building, these structures
evoke the character of the mudflat community and draw attention to the
advance of urban development in the Lower Mainland.

For
the last 12 years I've been running a non-profit organization in Delta
called Air Time Canada. We offer a free Aviation Camp where kids
(and
adults) learn how to co-pilot an airplane and get a chance to try it
out for real. It's completely free, in that we cover the cost of
the
ground school, food, flights, fuel, instructors, etc.
Participants do
have to pay for their own classroom supplies. You can find out a
lot
