Christmas memory
by Coleman
If I knew I was going to die tomorrow, and I got to choose one meal to eat before I died, it would be my Moms homemade turkey dinner. By far the best dinner I’ve ever had. The one special day she takes the time to make one of those is on Christmas day. It usually starts with my Aunt Debra, my Uncle Leigh, and my cousins Alannah and Leyland coming over at approximately 5:30 pm. Then later on at around 6:00 pm my Dad’s best friend Randall comes over. He likely wears a blue fleece vest with a pair of jeans and a white t-shirt. Once we’re all there we separate into are little groups.
Debra and my Mom consistently talk about the gossip that’s happening in the family right now. My Dad and Uncle Leigh commonly talk about politics and what’s wrong with todays government. My brother and Leyland ordinarily watch the special edition Christmas day basketball games. Me, my sister, and Alannah are routinely in the playroom; a cold dark room that consists of one light bulb, a television, a couple of card games, snacks, some movies, and my Xbox depending on whether or not I was in the mood to plug it out of are nice flat screen television and plug it into our bad box television upstairs in the playroom. And Randall, he’s everywhere in between. Anyways, at around 8:00 pm we have dinner.
Every time we walk into the dining room, the food looks absolutely tremendous. You have the crisp glowing turkey on the bottom right part of the table looking like it came out of Gordon Ramsey’s kitchen itself. Then you have the mashed potatoes looking like a little fluffy cloud that got stuck inside this big bowl and was mixed in with a bit of green onions and a bit of bacon. And of course the bread stuffing on the top right part of the table looking like it was literally made by the hand of God. And you can never forget the cranberries sauce which I can live without but my mom insists on having it every year. But the most important key item of this whole dinner is the gravy looking really brown and gross in its glass measuring cup but when you taste it your mouth jumps and screams with happiness as your taste buds laugh, dance and sing as you slide the rich creamy flavorful sauce into your mouth and then feel as it flows down your throat and makes everything warm inside and out.
Me, my sister, and my cousin are habitually eating at the breakfast bar where everything is squished and uncomfortable; too bad know one cares because we’re all too hungry to think. The adults are frequently sitting at the dining room table where they sit in their nice comfy chairs not having to reach for any food what so ever. And Leyland and my brother you can count on them being in the television room watching NBA basketball games while eating there dinner on these mini dinner tables mom bought at Wal-Mart for 20$ each. We’re all routinely done by 9:00 pm where we have apple and blueberry pie. The pie’s always look so good at the start, but once you bite into it you realize how full you are from the dinner.
Everyone’s probably done eating by 9:30 pm where we all go back into are little groups until 11:30 pm when my aunt, uncle and cousins leave to get back to their house in Deep cove. Randall on the other hand, is unpredictable because sometimes he stays until 12:00 pm and sometimes he stays until 2:00 am. Anyways I’m occasionally in bed at around 12:00 thinking about how much fun that day was and how I cant wait until next years. But when I’m about to fall asleep at around 1:00 am I’m not thinking about the presents or the food or even the fun, I’m thinking about how the time I spent with my family will always be cherished in my heart.
