Deborah Bakos
As climate catastrophes are fast becoming the threat
of choice for realists and doomsayers alike, we find ourselves in a cultural shift towards art that can provoke us. In Deborah?s  works, singular images symbolic of childhood innocence and freedom emerge as emptied human?hewn platforms. Dangling precariously and juxtaposed against violent skies, the platforms suggest fallout that alludes to our current and necessary preoccupation with climate change and the tentative, solitary relationships we have with our shared environment. Tension and movement are purposely wrought in all of her paintings through the use of stark contrasts in colour value and intensity, form and line.

West Side Story

Considered a great groundbreaking musical, West Side Story has remained a poignant, provocative and emotionally devastating piece of theater for over half a century. Dark in tone and content, the show is flush with many of legendary composer Leonard Bernstein's most famous compositions, offering a richly layered score played by a full orchestra—a rare find, even on Broadway, these days. Factor in recreations of original director and choreographer Jerome Robbins' equally iconic choreography, and the production becomes an electrifying piece of musical drama. Despite West Side's difficult themes, the show also offers some of the biggest, brightest crowd-pleasers in theater history, including uber-ballad “Tonight,” the chirpy "America" and the hilariously macabre "Gee Officer Krupke." The show may be a rollercoaster of emotions, but it offers something for every taste.  Queen Elizabeth Theatre

Meat the Truth
Meat the Truth is a high-profile documentary, presented by Marianne Thieme (leader of the Party for the Animals), which forms an addendum to earlier films that have been made about climate change. Although such films have convincingly succeeded in drawing public attention to the issue of global warming, they have repeatedly ignored one of the most important causes of climate change, namely: intensive livestock production. Meat the Truth has drawn attention to this by demonstrating that livestock farming generates more greenhouse gas emissions worldwide than all cars, lorries, trains, boats and planes added together. 7:00pm until 8:30pm.  Admission is free.  Alice Mackay Room, Lower Level, Central Library

Suzan finds the natural world a constant source of wonder and inspiration. By exploring the wildness of the landscape, she celebrates the strength and fragility of human spirit, our fragile connection with the manufactured environment, and our ultimate reliance upon the forces which shape our world. Her paintings are an ode to the complexity and interdependence of life, with all of its unpredictability and change.
Her ceramic work is both functional and exploratory. The alchemy of the glaze and the firing process are the means by which she brings out the depth, subtleties, and beauty of the surface. She creates in rich colours and incorporates driftwood as handles for her decorative ware, pouring vessels, and baskets.
Suzan completed the Studio Art Program at Capilano University in 1999, and finished a BFA at Emily Carr University in 2002. Since then she has worked from her East Vancouver studio and enjoys numerous associations with art collectives around the Lower Mainland.

THE SEAFARER by Conor McPherson
March 7-29 at Pacific Theatre
Vancouver, BC – It was a dark and stormy Dublin night when a game of cards took a sinister turn. In Conor McPherson’s suspenseful, dark comedy The Seafarer, produced by Pacific Theatre, old promises and forgotten bargains can come calling at any moment. For Sharky, that moment comes when an all-night poker game with a few old friends is attended by an unexpected guest.
Playing March 7-29 Wednesday – Saturday at 8pm with 2pm matinees on Saturdays and on Thursday, March 20th at Pacific Theatre, 1440 W 12th Ave. For tickets ($19.99-29.99, taxes and fees not incl.) call 604.731.5518 or visit www.pacifictheatre.org.
