Dr. Sun Yat Sen Classical Chinese Gardens Enchanted Evenings presents Deborah Ledon. Singer-songwriter and seasoned entertainer Deborah Ledon is as extraordinary as her life story. Film screening: Powell Street Festival Film Trilogy:
As Long As I Can Remember
By Lynda Nakashima
(2001)
As Long As I Can Remember explores the history and rich diversity of the Powell Street Festival, made in honour of its 25th anniversary year (2001). Reflecting the history of Japanese Canadians in Vancouver and the humble beginnings of the Festival itself, Nakashima’s documentary portrays the Festival with a sense of pride, community and reverence.
The Way We Are
By Lyndsay Sung and Rafael Tsuchida
(2007)
The Way We Are documents the annual wonderful madness that is the Powell Street Festival, made especially in honour of the 30th anniversary (2006). As seen through the eyes and lenses of two contemporary Asian Canadian Vancouver-based interdisciplinary artists, this experimental documentary mixes stop motion animation, offbeat techniques, video art and original pop music while managing to display the colorful blast of art, culture and history that occurs annually over the two day festival weekend.
The Spirit of Nihonmachi
By Greg Masuda
(2012)
For 35 years the Powell Street Festival has returned to its historical roots in Oppenheimer Park on Powell Street, an area once home to Vancouver’s Japanese Canadian population, . Situated in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, this neighbourhood is now often narrowly described as been a site for drug abuse, homelessness and mental illness. Laugh, learn and cheer as you experience both the vibrant Powell Street Festival and the life and community of the Downtown Eastside through the eyes and hearts of two long-term residents of the neighborhood, Kevin and Abraham.

That which makes us Haida: the Haida language. This exhibition documents the last remaining fluent speakers of the Haida language and explores the three remaining dialects found in Alaska, Old Massett and Skidegate through portraits taken by Vancouver-based photographer Farah Nosh over the last eight years and interviews with the last fluent speakers in these communities. These men and women (the youngest is now 65 years old) who grew up with active, fluent speakers in their homes, are dedicating their time to save this linguistic isolate from extinction by teaching in schools, creating a written orthography and orally documenting all the vocabulary they know. They speak of how the language has influenced their relationship to the land and the sea, and shaped their ability to feel and understand their relationship to the earth and all beings through respect for all things. A full-colour catalogue, with a foreward by renowned anthropologist Wade Davis, and a CD accompanies the exhibition (Haida Gwaii Museum Press). Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art

Exhibit Opening “Chinese Legacies: Building the Canadian Pacific Railway in British Columbia”  The Port Moody Station Museum is proud to present the exhibit Chinese Legacies: Building the Canadian Pacific Railway in British Columbia from May 14th to November 16th, 2012.  This traveling display was created by the Revelstoke Museum & Archive in partnership with the Revelstoke Railway Museum and portrays the history of the Chinese labourers who contributed to the building of the CPR between Port Moody and Craigellachie, BC.  In order to celebrate the arrival of this exhibit, the Museum will be hosting weekly family days every Sunday in July and August starting Canada Day weekend. The exhibit recounts the difficulties that faced the some 15,000 Chinese workers between 1880 and 1885 and includes a diorama of a typical Chinese worker’s campsite, artefacts such as opium pipes, coins, incense burners, as well as a slide show of historical photos.  It is estimated that between 600 and 2,200 workers lost their lives due to malnutrition, dangerous working conditions, and disease during this time. Discrimination was a daily reality for these workers, who would be paid half the salary of the white workers and were forced to do the most dangerous work in the camps.
